War history sailing, see the German installations from World War II in the border country between east and west, an area of great international strategic importance, both in war and peace.
It was at the today, so peaceful and magnificent Bøkfjorden, that the consequences of Hitler's order for a reinforced attack on the Murmansk front, triggered the need for a strong defense of the Kirkenes area's offensive functions. The Russians were to be defeated, and the defenses in Varanger were dimensioned to withstand attacks from the heaviest Allied naval forces.
0800: We sail out and arrive at Bøkfjord coastal battery at 10.30, a roadless and open landscape that almost takes our breath away. The field cannons are still lined up on their berths, close defense positions, observation posts and cover rooms stand as silent testimonies. It is almost unreal that more than 100 soldiers were stationed on the outermost headland.
1230: After a fjord sail into the Bøkfjord, we put on our helmets at 12.30 and enter the torpedo battery in Rødberg. This was to be the last, large, land-based defense measure against Kirkenes. 1330: Back on the ship we exhale, while we sail north towards Kjelmøysundet. 1500: Anchored at Mestersand, Kjelmøya. One can hardly imagine a more peaceful place today. Dinner is served on large plates, and a refreshing swim in the Arctic Ocean is possible.
1600: We put on our helmets again, and are ready to visit the area's largest fortification, Kjelmøya Kystbatteri. Experience the place where main batteries 4, 22.5 cm cannons were established. Walk through the landscape where in its time more than 500 soldiers worked. This was a busy place with features such as quays, roads / railways, large mountain facilities, barracks camps and bunkers.
18:00 After an eventful day in good company, set sail and head back towards Vadsø.
At 2000 we are moored at the floating pier in Vadsø.
To give you a good background information, you as participants will be sent our 19-page war history information letter which contains: stories, sketches, photos and technical data. Although we avoid identifying dangerous areas in and near the installations we are going to visit, we recommend that all participants who are going into bunkers and mountain facilities use our special helpers and possibly obtain their own travel insurance. ?
